Is your favorite Christmas decoration something that you find particularly beautiful, something a child gave to you, or something with a lot of memories? I had a hard time choosing a single favorite Christmas decoration, so I am sharing three of my favorite Christmas decorations with you today. I chose something old, something new, and something that I collect.
I inherited my something old Christmas decoration from my grandparents. They are very old and look like they have seen about 60 years of Christmases. (I am not sure how old they actually are, but 60-70 is probably a decent guess. They may be even older.) My grandparents put these cardboard houses under the tree every year, and I loved playing with them as a child. I would arrange them into a town and put Matchbox cars and tiny figures of people and animals around them into what I called Tree Town. I know, very creative name. For some reason, these houses were very special to me, and I’m glad that my grandparents eventually decided to pass them on to me. I still proudly display them on my mantle every year. About a year or two ago, I started finding new sets like these on Pinterest. I guess I was ahead of the curve on this retro Christmas trend.
My new favorite Christmas decoration is a nativity set that my mother started buying for me piece by piece a few years ago. The nativity set is special because it is a beautiful reminder of the reason for all of the seasonal insanity. It is a set by Fontanini that is made in Italy, which is special to me because I studied Italian and visited twice.
Last, I love my collection of Nutcrackers. I don’t go out looking for Nutcrackers each year, but I add one to the collection when I find one that is special to me for a certain reason. The nutcracker that started it all was the Drosselmeyer nutcracker holding a small nutcracker. If you’ve been reading my posts this month, you’ll know that the Nutcracker ballet has been one of my personal Christmas traditions for a very long time. I am slowly adding to that collection since receiving that first nutcracker as a gift from my mother. Some of my other favorite nutcrackers are the candy cane nutcracker that I got the year Brooke danced as a candy cane in the Nutcracker as well as the Irish nutcracker celebrating my Irish lineage.
What are your favorite Christmas decorations and why? When do you usually decorate your house for Christmas?
